What Exactly Is A DPF System?

DPF (or Diesel Particulate Filter) is a specialized filter localized behind the turbocharger. It reduces the amount of diesel particulate matter (e.g., ash and soot) in the exhaust gases, thus making the car more eco-friendly.

All filters, including DPF, gradually lose their efficiency while becoming more and more clogged. The DPF can be somewhat “cleaned up” through the regeneration process. Unfortunately, it requires special driving conditions to be conducted properly. If they're not met, the clogging will eventually reach the point at which the regeneration won’t be possible. A near-completely clogged filter not only causes power loss problems, but also poses the risk of damaging other equipment due to its overheating.

Conditions Conductive To Filter’s Clogging


More often than not, DPF blockage is caused by another serious issue. If it starts acting up, you should always thoroughly investigate the matter.

Typical causes of DPF’s blockages are:

  • Only short trips - using your car for only short drives (including “urban driving”) won’t be enough to allow the DPF to function properly, as it won’t be able to reach its working temperature. This also means that the regeneration process won’t start.
  • Damaged/faulty sensors - DPFs have several sensors (both before and after the filter itself) that monitor its back pressure and temperature (both initial and final). They are quite delicate and if any of them stops working, the regeneration process may cease itself.
  • Faulty/damaged EGR valve - these valves recirculate exhaust gasses to the engine before they pass through DPF. In some car models, a damaged or ineffective EGR valve lets through increased amounts of these gasses, which in turn can shorten the DPF’s lifespan.
  • Damaged/defective swirl flaps - swirl flaps (similarly to EGR valves) are meant to help control the car’s emissions. Any defects/damage can affect their work and accelerate DPF’s blocking, which is a best-case scenario.
  • Failed regeneration - certain conditions must be met for the regeneration process to go smoothly. If any of them isn’t met or the process is prematurely stopped, the DPF won’t function properly.

All the ECU DPF-related errors can be eliminated by physically removing the DPF and remapping the car’s ECU with our dedicated files. The most common of those errors are:
